Stunned...

Bold, beautiful and compassionate. She had giant brass balls, a woman speaking out and leading others to a better place in a environment that oppresses and degrades women just because. And she served as Prime Minister, twice, in a world that just wanted to destroy her. We, as a common people, have lost a piece of something too great to be contained in a mortal shell today.

What it's about...

Writers learn real quick to deal with overwhelming, subjective rejection. And one of the hardest things to learn is to maintain a sense of self worth and confidence in a story even as it racks up the rejects. Just because it has some nos, heck, just because it has a lot of nos doesn't mean a piece is crap. It could just mean that you are not targeting you submission well, or just getting out done. But since you don't know, because you don't see the rest of the slush pile, it's real easy to get discouraged and want to give up, even if you believe in the story and the writing in the piece. Authors also learn that one acceptance can counter act a whole lot of rejections. Speaking of which, my story Scarecrow has been accepted by Pseudopod to be part of their horror fiction podcast. I'm very excited about this because I really like the concept of fiction podcasts and I've been trying to get into Pseudopod for over a year now. This is actually a "reprint" (sort of, Scarecrow has appeared in print before, but not audio) so it's even more exciting that the first story I published is still decent enough to get a yes.
Warning, the video I link to is disturbing in a highly interesting way. But it is definitely inspiring. See video of an eight armed little girl here Also, last week's issue of TIME has an excellent article about inventions/innovations that have come to reality this past year. Scifi readers and writer will probably find some great inspiration there. Some of my favorites are: A wind and solar powered car. (available in 2008) A hybrid steam engine. (prototype) Methane-fueled engine for rockets ships and probes with plans to carry little fuel then just “fill up” from another planet's or moon's atmosphere. (prototype) The StarChase Pursuit Management system, a laser-guided GPS launcher to end high speed pursuits by tagging the fugitive and then planning a better way to stop them. (Available early 2008) Expresso Book Machine, perhaps this should be in a longer post later, but if problems like not enough books being available or this being used as yet another way to self publish can be avoided this will kick some serious butt. (Available now) glo Pillow. A pillow with an alarm that wakes you up by simulating a sunrise with LED lights inside. Now, I doubt it would work for me because I am real hard on pillows, but neat nonetheless. (Prototype) Erasable paper, it reacts to light so you “print” on it with light and in 24 hours the “print” fades and the sheet can be used again. (prototype) A stamp with embedded seeds in it so you can “plant it”. I've seen parchment and wedding invitations like this, and I still think it's neat. I wonder if agents would appreciate some flowers with their queries? A thin skinned frogs which are actually translucent (Pictures and more detail here as it too, is a little disturbing.). The idea is to make dissection unnecessary. Convertible shoes, with a heel that can fold from stiletto length to kitten sized for more comfort during commutes Terabyte hard drives :droooool: (Available now) Light emitting wall paper A method to convert Types A, B and AB-negative blood into O negative blood. And, a messenger bag with wires on the inside and a solar panel on the outside making it possible for you to recharge electronics while walking around, or sitting on a Starbucks patio.. (Now available, about $200) I know what I want for Christmas... | WriYe: 105,358/100,000 | WC November: ---- |

The WGA Strike

I know this is a huge issue right now, and personally even though I'm not involved I have been going back and forth on how I feel about it. I mean, writers absolutely should get royalties on Itunes and downloaded shows/movies. It's the same issue (with different terms) as earlier this year when writers sued the New York Times for only buying print rights to articles, but putting them up online as well. There are so many different rights these days. Each media is a new one-- Print, electronic, audio, merchandising... How would you, as a writer feel if a magazine bought your story for a print anthology (paying you an advance and then royalties), then released the anthology in ebook form and said that those sales don't count toward your royalties at all. That's what the strike is about. It didn't really hit home for me until I read this blog. If you want an inside opinion to judge for yourself, that's a good place to start. | WriYe: 105,358/100,000 | WC November: ---- |

Good News...

Good News... I was very very pleased to see this Sunday over on the Loose ID blog. “Earlier this week, a representative of Loose Id, LLC entered a bid in the bankruptcy proceedings of Triskelion Publishing for the contractual assets of the company. If successful in their bid, Loose Id, LLC will release the majority of contracts at no cost to the authors who entered into them.” Hell yeah! What a fantastic, supportive move for another epublisher to make. This should be proof that not all epublishers, or publishers period are the same. I'm rooting for Loose ID in this. I am one section away from having Corpse Blood finished. I was also supposed to finish a book I'm reading for review over at Monsterlibrarian.com However, we're currently being pummeled by storms. I'm sneaking this up between storms because they're saying with each one the chances of losing power are increased. I hope everyone else out there being hammered comes through this unharmed. New! Halloween funnies...

Snagged from a much passed around mail... A Halloween Safety Public Service Announcement As we all prepare for the upcoming Halloween season, please take a few minutes to read some simple rules to help keep everyone safe. 1. Don't assume the telephone calls are coming from another house. 2. When it appears that you have killed the monster, NEVER check to see if it's really dead. 3. Never read a book of demon summoning aloud, even as a joke. 4. Don't go into the basement to check the power when the lights go out! 5. If your children speak to you in Latin or any other language which they should not know, shoot them immediately. It will save you a lot of grief in the long run. However, it will probably take several rounds to kill them, so be prepared. This also applies to kids who speak with somebody else's voice. 6. When you have the benefit of numbers, NEVER split up and go it alone. 7. Don't have sex. Especially if you've noticed a few of your friends are missing! 8. As a general rule, don't solve puzzles that open a portal to Hell. 9. Never stand in, on, or above a grave, tomb, or crypt. This would apply to any other house of the dead as well. 10. If you're searching for something which caused a loud noise and find out that it's just the cat, don't stand there sighing with relief, GET THE HELL OUT! 11. If appliances start operating by themselves, don't check for short circuits; JUST GET OUT! 12. Do not take ANYTHING from the dead. 13. If you find a town which looks deserted, there's probably a good reason for it. Don't stop and look around. 14. Don't fool with recombinant DNA technology unless you're sure you know what you're doing. 15. If you're running from the monster, expect to trip or fall down at least twice, more if you are of the female persuasion. Also note that, despite the fact that you are running and the monster is merely ambling along, it's still moving fast enough to catch up w ith you. 16. If your companions suddenly begin to exhibit uncharacteristic behavior such as hissing, fascination for blood, glowing eyes, increasing hairiness, and so on, kill them immediately. 17. Stay away from certain geographical locations, some of which are listed here: Amityville, Elm Street, Transylvania, Nilbog (you're in trouble if you recognize this one), the Bermuda Triangle, or any small town in Maine. 18. If your car runs out of gas at night on a lonely road, do not go to the nearby deserted-looking house to phone for help. If you think that it is strange because you thought you had 3/4 of a tank, shoot yourself instead. You are going to die anyway, and will most likely be eaten. 19. Beware of strangers bearing strange tools. For example:chainsaws, staple guns, hedge trimmers, electric carving knives, combines, lawnmowers, butane torches, soldering irons, band saws, or any devices made from deceased companions. 20. If you find that your house is built upon a cemetery, now is the time to move in with the in-laws. This also applies to houses that had previous inhabitants who went mad or committed suicide or died in some horrible fashion. If you follow these rules, you should have a SAFE Halloween experience.
